For learners without any, or very low-level Welsh language skills, the awareness/ymwybyddiaeth level of Prentis-iaith is an introduction to Welsh language and teaches candidates to learn basic Welsh words and phrases as a foundation on which they may build, such as greetings, short sentences and pronunciations.
For progressing from the awareness level, or for learners with some basic Welsh language skills, they are encouraged to complete the understanding/dealltwriaeth level of Prentis-iath, where they will be given an opportunity to become more familiar with the use of Welsh words, and will develop their conversational Welsh skills, key terms that relate to their qualification and feedback from their tutor/assessor.
For learners who can speak Welsh but may lack the confidence to use it, they are encouraged to complete the confidence/hyder level of Prentis-iaith. The purpose of this level is to encourage learners to make the most of their Welsh language, practice their Welsh language skills and gain more confidence using it everyday at work and in life.
For progressing from the confidence level or for fluent Welsh speakers, the fluency/rhuglder level of Prentis-iath supports learners to develop Welsh terminology used in social care, read and write more confidently in Welsh and to carry out, or support other social care workers to carry out, assessments with Welsh speaking individuals.
